What is the difference between an energy gel and an energy drink?
Both supply carbohydrate during exercise. A gel is a concentrated single serving, usually taken with water; a drink mix combines the carbohydrate with the fluid you drink anyway. Canned energy drinks are a different product: they are built around caffeine, and many carry little or no carbohydrate.
What does isotonic mean on a gel?
An isotonic gel is diluted to roughly the concentration of body fluids, so it is made to be taken without extra water. It carries less carbohydrate per gram than a standard gel, so a serving is larger.
Do energy gels contain caffeine?
Some do, and the amount differs from product to product, so check the label. Caffeinated and caffeine-free versions of the same gel are often sold side by side; keep track of which one you have, especially if you take several during a race.
