The protein powder shelf holds dozens of tubs with labels that look almost the same. The points below help you see the real differences, and then use what you buy sensibly.
Concentrate (WPC) or isolate (WPI)?
The difference comes down to how far the processing goes. Whey concentrate is filtered from whey and keeps some lactose and fat; its protein content usually sits around 70-80%. Isolate goes through an extra filtration step that removes most of the lactose and fat, bringing protein close to 90%.
The practical takeaway: isolate gives you more protein per gram, but costs more per gram. If lactose doesn't bother you and your calorie budget isn't tight, concentrate is enough in most cases and cheaper. When there's a real reason to prefer isolate, such as lactose sensitivity or very strict calorie tracking, the difference starts to matter.
What to really look at: protein per serving
A claim like "80% protein" on the front isn't enough to compare products, because scoop sizes vary from brand to brand. The question that matters is: how many grams of protein are in one scoop, and how many grams does that scoop weigh?
Example: 24 g of protein in a 30 g scoop is 80% protein. The same 24 g in a 35 g scoop is about 69%, so every scoop carries more that isn't protein. Working out this ratio is the fastest way to see past the marketing copy.
The second step is to combine that ratio with price: what does a fixed amount of protein cost you? A tub with a high sticker price can turn out cheaper once its protein density is taken into account. Check the amino acid profile, and watch for "spiking"
Whey naturally contains branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), especially leucine. Some brands add extra free amino acids to show a higher number on the label. That isn't bad in itself, but added free amino acids can be counted toward the total protein figure and make the real whey content look higher than it is. If you see a "protein blend," check the ingredient order.
Hydrolyzed whey (WPH)
Hydrolyzed whey is protein that has been pre-broken into smaller pieces. In theory it's absorbed faster. But when your total daily protein intake is adequate, that speed has limited practical value, and hydrolyzed whey is noticeably more expensive and often more bitter. For most people it doesn't justify the extra cost.
Flavor and mixability are secondary
Flavor is personal and says nothing about quality. Still, a product you don't enjoy drinking is a product you won't use consistently. If you're trying a new brand, a single-serve packet or a small tub is a lower-risk start than the biggest size.
Clumping usually happens when the powder goes into the shaker first. Add the liquid first, then the powder, and use roughly the amount of liquid the label suggests.
How much per day?
There's no fixed number of scoops. The right order is: set your daily protein target, estimate how much of it you already get from food, and use powder to close the gap. Do you have to drink it right after training?
The idea of a narrow 30-minute "anabolic window" gets much less emphasis in current sports nutrition sources than it used to. Total daily protein intake matters far more than the timing of a single shake. Drinking it after a workout is fine; it just isn't required. The best time is whenever you struggle to get protein from food.
Milk or water?
Both work; the difference is calories and texture. Water keeps it lighter. Milk improves taste and texture and adds protein and carbohydrate, which helps if you're trying to gain weight and needs counting if you track calories. If milk upsets your stomach, try water before blaming the powder.
Is it a meal replacement?
No. A scoop of whey mainly provides protein; it lacks the fiber, vitamins and minerals of a real meal. Meal replacement shakes are a separate product category formulated for that purpose.
If you're lactose intolerant
Concentrate contains some lactose and can cause bloating or discomfort in sensitive people. Isolate is usually the better choice because most of the lactose is removed. If problems continue, a plant-based protein is an option.
Plant protein and casein
Plant proteins such as pea, rice or soy can have less balanced amino acid profiles on their own, which is why many plant products blend several sources. Casein is the other main milk protein and digests more slowly, so it's often used before long gaps like overnight. Neither is "better" than whey; they're different tools, and meeting your daily total matters more than which one you pick.

Sweeteners, flavors, thickeners and anti-caking agents are normal. What matters is what comes first: if a carbohydrate such as maltodextrin is listed before the protein source, the product is closer to a carb-protein mix than a protein powder, and its price should be judged that way.
Is it third-party tested?
In the US, dietary supplements aren't approved by the FDA before they're sold; the manufacturer is responsible for what's on the label. Independent certifications such as NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Choice test products for label accuracy and banned substances. Their absence doesn't make a product bad, but their presence is a meaningful sign of trust, and it matters most if you compete in a tested sport.
Storage
Keep the tub closed, cool and dry; moisture causes clumping and degrades quality. A wet scoop left inside brings moisture with it. When buying a large tub, check that you'll finish it well before the best-by date.
