Creatine is one of the most researched sports supplements, and also one of the most heavily marketed. The points below cover how to use it and how to tell real differences between products from packaging.
The main rule: consistency, not timing
Creatine doesn't work like a pre-workout. It needs to build up to a saturation level in your muscles, and with a daily maintenance dose that takes around three to four weeks. That's why "did I take it every day?" matters much more than "what time did I take it?"
The practical consequence: keep taking it on rest days. Muscle creatine stores don't empty after a workout; they decline slowly, and skipping rest days pulls saturation down. By the same logic, forgetting one day is no disaster.
How much per day?
A common maintenance dose is 3-5 grams per day, and most products use a 5 g scoop. Taking more doesn't saturate you faster: muscle can only hold so much, and the excess is excreted. Ten grams a day doesn't beat five; it just empties the tub twice as fast.

Is a loading phase necessary?
No. A loading phase (commonly about 20 g a day split into four doses for 5-7 days) reaches saturation in roughly a week instead of three to four. The end point is the same either way.
If you're not in a hurry, starting straight at 3-5 g a day is simpler and easier on the stomach; the most commonly reported side effect of high doses is digestive discomfort. Loading also uses up a large part of a tub in the first week.
Monohydrate is the standard form
You'll see creatine HCl, ethyl ester, buffered creatine and others, all sold as better than monohydrate. The vast majority of research has been done on monohydrate, and there's no strong evidence that alternative forms offer a meaningful advantage. Unless you have a specific reason, monohydrate is both the best-studied form and usually the cheapest per gram.
What "Creapure" means
Creapure is the trade name for creatine monohydrate made by the German manufacturer AlzChem. It isn't a different kind of creatine; its value is a documented production and purity standard. It's not a guarantee, and many non-Creapure products are good, but a clearly stated source is a sign of trust. Worth it when the price gap is small; not needed when it's large.
Micronized or regular?
Micronized creatine is ground finer, so it disperses more easily and leaves less sediment. There's no demonstrated advantage in absorption or effect; the difference is comfort. If the grit bothers you, choose it, but it isn't worth a big premium. Some sediment in cold water is normal and doesn't mean the product is bad.
Flavored or unflavored?
Unflavored creatine is usually cheaper per gram because it's only creatine. In flavored products, sweeteners and flavors make up part of the weight, so a 300 g flavored tub may not contain 300 g of creatine. Check the grams of creatine per serving on the Supplement Facts panel. Unflavored creatine mixes easily into a protein shake or juice.
What to mix it with
Water is enough. Taking it with a carbohydrate drink is often said to improve uptake; any effect is small next to daily consistency. Mixing it into the same shaker as protein powder is fine; neither blocks the other.
Water retention is normal
Creatine draws water into muscle cells, which can show up on the scale as a quick gain. That's water inside the muscle, not fat. If you track your weight, expect it so it doesn't cause needless worry. When you stop taking creatine, that extra water gradually leaves; muscle built through training doesn't disappear with it.
Do you need to cycle off?
There's no established evidence that continuous use is harmful, so rules like "take a break every 8 weeks" come from habit rather than necessity. If you stop, muscle creatine returns to baseline over a few weeks, and saturation starts over when you resume.
Does dose depend on body weight?
In theory, more muscle mass means more storage capacity. In practice the difference fits within the 3-5 g range: a large athlete may choose the top of the range, a smaller person the bottom. The same range applies to women.
Caffeine and creatine
There's an old debate about caffeine blunting creatine's effect, but no clear conclusion. Many people take creatine with coffee or a caffeinated pre-workout without an established problem.
The "hurts your kidneys" myth
There's no established evidence that recommended doses harm kidney function in healthy people. Part of the confusion is that creatine can raise blood creatinine, a marker used to estimate kidney function, so a lab result can look misleadingly high. Tell your doctor you take creatine before a blood test. If you have a known kidney condition, talk to your doctor before using it.
Storage and shelf life
Keep it cool, dry and closed; creatine absorbs moisture and clumps. Clumps don't necessarily mean it's spoiled, but they make measuring harder. At 5 g a day a 1 kg tub lasts 200 days, so check the best-by date before assuming the biggest tub is the best deal.
